Mary West
Mary West is a contemporary British painter whose work explores the relationship between landscape, memory and emotion. A graduate of the Slade School of Fine Art, she creates expressive paintings that blur the boundaries between abstraction and representation, drawing inspiration from the natural world and her personal experience of place.
Working primarily in oil paint, West is known for her intuitive approach and dynamic use of colour. Her paintings are built through gestural mark-making, layered textures and fluid compositions that evoke shifting light, weather and atmosphere. Rather than depicting specific locations, her works aim to capture the emotional resonance of a landscape and the memories associated with it.
Landscape remains at the heart of her practice, providing a starting point for paintings that balance observation with imagination. Rich colour palettes and expressive brushwork create a sense of movement and depth, inviting viewers to engage with nature through feeling rather than direct description.
West has exhibited widely in the UK and internationally, with solo exhibitions in London and Europe. Her work is held in private collections across Europe, North America, Asia and Australia, reflecting the growing appreciation of her distinctive approach to contemporary landscape painting.
Through her vibrant and atmospheric paintings, Mary West transforms remembered landscapes into evocative visual experiences, creating works that celebrate light, colour and the enduring emotional power of the natural world.
